The culture mill is a meeting space for people to relax, to talk, to eat, to perform.
It is an open and public house for creation and experimentation in various artistic fields.
The culture mill pavilion is inspired by the windmills of azores as tradicional buildings of the islands.
The windmills not only served the purpose of grinding or milling the corn into flour, but it also became a gathering place where people could meet and exchange the latest gossips and news.
The pavilions central space is the ‘culture mill‘ circular space, sorrounded by areas in the corner of the square
shaped floorplan. The corner towards the Micaelense theatre is an open space where hammocks and different seatings can be placed.
The stage is placed in the corner on the opposite side, so the performances and other activities on the stage are open towards the mill and the São João Square.
In the other two corners there are the bar & canteen area and technical area with storage.
The projection area and cabin for sound will be placed in the technical area.
The open space of the pavilion allows us to divide it with courtains into areas according to the activities.
It either can be one big space for the audience during a concert or a performance and when the stage is used for workshops it can be divided into smaller areas
for meeting and chilling with other artists, visitors.
The columns, beams, panels are designed from cryptomeria wood.
The whole pavilion is covered with white translucent canvas.
In the middle there is a metal roof construction, reminding us the roof of the windmills and also making the central space higher.
The moduls with wooden panels can be pre-assembled.
The ordinary dimensions of wooden construction allow the materials to be reused in other projects and materials from previous projects can be recycled in this design.
Outdoor furniture such as benches, tables and hammocks are part of the open space.
The panels used as bar windows can be used for promotion and advertising the program of the festival.
The circle in the middle is creating the feeling of unity with all the artists, visitors and organizers.
